Eco-Schools
At Thomas Whitehead we have an Eco-Schools committee called the “Eco Bugs.” This is made up of representatives from each class across keys stages 1 and 2.
Eco-Schools is an international award programme for schools. At Thomas Whitehead we have our Silver Award. Eco-Schools can help enhance the curriculum and get the whole school united behind something important. The mission is to help make every school in the country sustainable and to bring about behaviour change in young people and those connected to them so that good habits learned in schools are followed through into homes and communities.
Our Eco Bugs are passionate about the environment and together make an Action Plan and Eco Code for the whole school to follow. They have regular checks to do around school such as monitoring energy use and they have jobs to do such as litter picking and composting.
Activities are planned under 9 areas; transport, litter, healthy living, school grounds, energy, water, biodiversity, waste and global citizenship.
We take part in National Initiatives such as The Santa Challenge, Walk to School Week and The Big Pedal. We have held a Diversity Day to celebrate our Diverse School and have performed a play about Litter.
