History
A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupil’s curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. DFE 2014
Intent:
Through the teaching of History, we want our children to:
- have an understanding of history within living and beyond living memory, understanding the impact of history then and now
- understand the chronology of events and significant people and places through a variety of reliable sources of evidence
- understand and use vocabulary associated with the passing of time.
Many children who have SEND are able to access the History curriculum at an age appropriate level, with appropriate support / differentiated ways to learn and record information as required. Pre-teaching, and gap filling, is provided for pupils who have SEND in order to support them to access learning alongside their peers and to work at or towards age related expectations.
In cases where pupils who have SEND are not able to access age related skills and knowledge, that from different year group is taught as previously planned by the class teacher. Having secured that knowledge and skills the intention is that they progress towards that which is age related. Assessment and monitoring is tracked on Curriculum Maestro.
Implementation:
Mr T J Hammond is our Humanities Co-ordinator.
Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage
History Programmes of Study Key Stages 1 and 2
History is taught in Projects. Teachers then plan the key knowledge and skills for each lesson using Curriculum Maestro Consideration is given to ensure progression across the topic throughout each year group across the school. Cross-curricular outcomes in history are identified and planned for, with strong links between reading, writing, maths and art/design.
Impact:
All children are assessed in History, by their teachers at the end of each unit. Mrs. Cox then analyses the attainment and progress of the whole school in this area. This information informs future teaching and learning in History.
